Glossary of Terms

Snatch: the general term for a lift where the weighted bar is pulled from the floor to above the athletes head in one continuous motion.

Clean: the general term for a lift where the bar is pulled from the floor to across the athlete's shoulders in one continuous motion.

Jerk: completed after the clean during competitions, the bar is projected upwards from the shoulders overhead; this is done using a leg drive as opposed the arm and shoulder strength.

Double Knee Bend: the transition phase between the first and second pull where the knees are driven back under the bar to return the athlete to the 'power position' Triple Extension; the extension of the ankles, knees and hips simultaneously during the 'second pull'. This is biomechanically similar to vertical jumping, sprinting and many other movements in sport.
